Kick Off meeting with UNU-FTP and partners in FarFish, EU Horizon 2020 project
UNU-FTP is partnering in an EU Horizon 2020 project, FarFish, relating to improving the sustainability of EU fishing outside European waters. Within the project, the UNU-FTP is leading work related to capacity development and dissemination. The project launched last week with a Kick-Off meeting hosted by one of the project partners, CETMAR in Vigo, Spain.

UNU-GEST receives two grants from Icelandic Gender Equality Fund
On 19th June, a day is dedicated to women´s rights in Iceland, the Minister of Gender awarded grants from the Icelandic Gender Equality Fund. UNU-GEST received two grants, for the research-based project Gender Focused Value Chain Development of Aquaculture in Gaza Province, Mozambique, and for a short course to be held in Uganda on Gender and Climate Change. Dr. Pétur Waldorff and Erla Hlín Hjálmarsdóttir attended the ceremony as grant recipients.

Visit from the University of Leeds
Recently, UNU-LRT welcomed Dr Lindsay Stringer and Dr Claire Quinn from the University of Leeds in the UK. Dr Stringer gave a lecture at UNU-LRT on the economics of land degradation and sustainable land management. In her talk she introduced the ELD 6+1 step methodology and shared results from a cost-benefit study of sustainable land management uptake for individual farmers in Kenya. Her talk spurred lively discussions facilitated by both Dr Stringer and Dr Quinn.

Workshop on Women Entrepreneurs and Sustainable Energy in Africa Kicks off in Gabon
A workshop bringing together more than 100 women energy entrepreneurs and experts in energy policy, financing and capacity building, opened yesterday in Libreville, Gabon. The two-day workshop titled Women Entrepreneurs and Sustainable Energy in Africa brings to light the role that women can play across the energy value chain to expand economic opportunities and alleviate energy poverty. UNU-GEST joined forces with UN Environment, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Iceland, UN Women and Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA) in organizing the event alongside the Sixteenth Session of the African Ministerial Conference on Environment (AMCEN 16).

Linking migration, land degradation, and land restoration: potential for sustainable livelihoods.
UNU-LRT held a workshop at the Estoril Conferences last week together with its partners in the ENABLE consortium. The theme of the workshop was Linking migration, land degradation, and land restoration: potential for sustainable livelihoods. At the workshop, two former UNU-LRT fellows, Dr Bulgamaa Densambuu from Mongolia and Mr Moustapha Ibrahim from Niger, shared experiences on restoration work in their countries. In their talks they showcased the benefits land restoration brings to local communities, such as employment, food security and business opportunities. This improves the livelihoods and living condition of local people and reduces the need to migrate.
