Congratulations to the UNU-GEST fellows of 2015

The United Nations University Gender Equality Studies and Training Programme (UNU-GEST) celebrated the graduation of ten fellows with a post-graduate diploma in international gender studies. The fellows came from four different countries; five men and five women from Malawi, Mozambique, Palestine and Uganda.

Gender transformative approaches for sustainable rural development: Experiences from Sub-Saharan Africa

On Thursday May 21 Clare Bishop-Sambrook, Lead Technical Specialist, Policy and Technical Advisory Division at the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) in Rome, gave a public talk entitled „Gender transformative approaches for sustainable rural development: Experiences from Sub-Saharan Africa“. Clare discussed the importance of ensuring a gender perspective when implementing projects on rural livelihood and food security in IFAD’s work in sub-Saharan Africa.

UNU-GEST Director and Deputy Minister of Women´s Affair in Palestine discuss future cooperation

The Deputy Minister of the Palestinian Ministry of Women’s Affairs, Mr. Bassam Al-Khatib, met with Dr. Irma Erlingsdottir, the Director of the United Nations University Gender Equality Studies and Training Programme at the University of Iceland, in Ramallah this week to discuss future cooperation.

Tony Bero: Profile of a UNU-GEST Fellow 2015

An interview with Tony Bero, a UNU-GEST fellow from Palestine, was featured in the weekly newsletter of the Icelandic Development Agency, ICEIDA. Tony Bero is 35 years old and comes from Beit Jala city, near Bethlehem in West Bank, Palestine. He works at UNRWA/WBFO, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, which was established in 1949.

UN Peace Operations and the Use of Force: Issues, Lessons and Prospects

Mats Berdal, Professor of Security & Development at King‘s College London, and UNU-GEST board member gave public talk entitled “UN Peace Operations and the Use of Force – Issues, Lessons and Prospects” on Friday 13 February 2015. The talk considered one of the principal issues facing the High-Level Panel on UN Peace Operations, which was set up in 2014: whether or not UN forces should prepare for, and engage in, more robust peacekeeping, perhaps even be prepared to take on a war-fighting role.
