On Thursday the 8th of September M. M. Mahbub Alam will defend his Ph.D. thesis in Biology. The thesis is titled: Origin and population structure of major prawn and shrimp species in Bangladesh.

Short course on Value Chain Approach in the Caribbean

A five day course on Value Chain Approach in Caribbean Fisheries is being delivered in Paramaribo in Suriname by the UNU-FTP and the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM) July 18-22 as part of collaboration between the two parties on developing fisheries among states in the Caribbean Community.

Fellows attend IIFET 2016 conference in Aberdeen, Scotland

The UNU-FTP awarded grants to nine former fellows to attend the International Institute of Fisheries Economics and Trade (IIFET) conference July 11-15, 2016 held in Aberdeen, Scotland. This year, the conference theme was "Challenging new frontiers in the global seafood sector: A northern enlightenment."

Short Course: Value Addition and Raw Material Handling in Bangladesh

A new short course, entitled "Quality Management And Value Addition in Fisheries in Bangladesh" was developed through cooperation with the UNU-FTP, Bangladesh Shrimp and Fish Foundation (BSFF) and Matís and was held at the Marine Fisheries Academy in Chittagong, Bangladesh May 8-13, 2016.

UNU-FTP short course on SPS Management for Caribbean specialists

Eighteen professionals, working in Fisheries Management, Animal Health and Food Safety and from across the CARIFORUM region, were specially selected to attend a SPS Management Course during 17-30 April 2016 at the Marine Research Institute in Reyjavik, Iceland. The course will expose the selected trainees to the full range of issues faced in fisheries value chain management, with special focus on achieving SPS measures and the institutional arrangements required for optimized performance of the fishing industry.

UNU-FTP fellow Ricardo Morris completes MSc in Biology at the University of Iceland

Last week, UNU-FTP fellow and scholarship recipient Ricardo Morris of Jamaica successfully completed his Master's of Science at the University of Iceland in marine biology. Mr. Morris was a fellow in the UNU-FTP six month programme in 2010, at which time he specialised in fisheries policy and planning. His thesis was entitled, "Distribution of Queen conch (Strombus gigas) on the Pedro Bank, Jamaica: Descriptive and Predictive distribution models"
