UNU-GEST Director joins the World Assembly for Women in Tokyo
UNU-GEST Director, Dr. Irma Erlingsdóttir, is participating in the World Assembly for Women - WAW! 2015 - in Tokyo on 28-29 August hosted by the Government of Japan. The Assembly aims to create a worldwide movement to promote women’s active participation and success in society where Women Shine, which continues to be one of the priority issues of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe Administration. Female leaders from all over the world participate in the symposium, so lively and productive discussions on various women's issues are to be expected.
The event opens by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, followed by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia and UN Women’s Executive Director Ms Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka. Irma will join a high-level expert panel to discuss participation of women in society and challenges facing women worldwide. Furthermore, numerous side events are scheduled for the Assembly.
During the WAW! 2015 Irma will meet with Prime Minster Abe, Minister Michaelia Cash, the Australian Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Women, Mrs. Cherie Blair, founder of the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women, and Ambassador Marriët Schuurman, NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for Women, Peace and Security.
