UNU-GEST 2016 presentations continued: Actions to End Gender-Based Discrimination and Confronting Systemic Biases

Session one, regarding ‘Actions to End Gender-Based Discrimination’, saw talks by Harriet Atim Obong, Roselyn Dalitso Makhambera, Noora Salah Aldeen and Miriam Akot. Opening the session, Harriet Atim Obong addressed gender-based discrimination through a discussion on the contribution to the end of child marriages and teen pregnancies in Uganda. Following this, Roselyn Dalitso Makhambera presented her talk on reducing police violence against sex workers in Malawi. Noora Salad Aldeen spoke on gender and migration, presenting her research proposal on ‘The Case of Beit Hanina’ in East Jerusalem. Closing the first session, Miriam Akot presented her project proposal titled ‘Promotion of Menstrual Hygiene among Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Vocational Rehabilitation Centres in Uganda’.

 

 

 

 

Session two, titled ‘Confronting Systemic Biases’, saw four more fellows present their final projects. Daniel Amponsah opened the second session, speaking on ‘Sexuality in Transition’, with a case study comprising of content analysis of media discourse on non-heterosexual orientations and behaviours in Ghana. Marilú João, gave a presentation of her essay titled ‘Collective Suicide: The Social Construction of Beauty Relating to Black Women’s Hair in Maputo, Mozambique’. Abel Nuwamanya, specialising in gender and the law, discussed ‘A New Perspective to Equality in Uganda’. Finally, to end 2016’s final presentations, Amélia Zawangoni presented her final project proposal titled ‘Monitoring and Evalusation System with Mozambican Gender Machinery: Diagnosis for Improvement’.

 

 

The students, who have been attending the UNU-GEST programme since January, presented their work after submitting their final examinations for the diploma. The presentations consisted of essays, project proposals and research proposals, many of which shall be implemented in the fellows’ areas of expertise once the UNU-GEST study programme has been completed.

 

The UNU-GEST team warmly congratulate all fellows on their presentations, and on the completion of the United Nations University Gender Equality Studies and Training Programme Post-graduate Diploma in International Gender Studies.

The fellows’ final 2016 graduation ceremony shall take place at Askja 132 on Wednesday 25 May.
