Open seminar "The Press in Palestine"
The open seminar discussing the media landscape in Palestine is hosted by UNU-GEST, the Höfði Reykjavik Peace Centre and the Institute of International Affairs on Thursday, 24 May, from 8:30 to 9:30 at Oddi 101 at the University of Iceland.
The seminar focuses on the media landscape in Palestine and the difficulties members of the press face working in this field. Additionally, the benefits of using social media in the Palestinian struggle against the Israeli occupation will also be discussed.
Juman Ali Mustafa Quneis teaches and works as chairperson of the Media Department at Birzeit University in Palestine. She holds an MA degree in Human Rights and Democracy. She worked as a senior broadcaster and producer for Palestinian radio (1996-2006), and a presenter of a very well-known TV show called "Lazem Nehki" which means "We have to talk" focusing on social taboos. Mrs. Quneis is the author of four books: The impact of religious Islamic channels on women in Palestine, Arts of radio, The Palestinian media and The split between Fatah and Hamas.
Mohammad Abualrob is an Assistant Professor of media at Birzeit University, Palestine. He holds a PhD in Media Studies from Vienna University, Austria. He has published two books focusing on media, religion and politics in the Middle East in addition to several academic papers. He has trained journalist groups on social media, electronic media and data journalism in cooperation with UNESCO and the WORLD BANK.
