NEW Online Course: Gender and Development

On 9 February 2023 GEST launched its third massive open online course, this time on gender and development. A total of 220 people enrolled for the test run. Today marks the release of the final module and exam of the first run of the course. From today and henceforth, all content in Gender & Development: Critical Theories and Approaches will be open to everyone, regardless of whether you want to take the final exam and earn a diploma, or whether you just want to audit and surf all the course content for free. The course introduces learners to some of the main critical theories and topics necessary for understanding a complicated and sometimes contradictory relationship between gender equality and international development initiatives. The course was produced with support from ERASMUS+ and expertise and guest lecturers from the London School of Economics, Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRiO), the University of Oslo and the University of Cape Town.

By the end of this course, learners will understand and be able to discuss:

* How The State regulates gender roles
* How to recognize examples of State-produced gendered harm
* How international security is different from male and female perspectives
* Women’s role in security and defense forces
* The relationship between gender and violent extremism/terrorism
* Securitization and children born of war
* Gender-responsive peacebuilding
* How women have contributed to peace through civil society
* The gender dimensions of Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration processes
* The concept of decolonization in various development contexts
* How colonial legacies influence education and knowledge
* How coloniality influences collective trauma
* How gender and development initiatives played out in post-apartheid South Africa
* The trials and errors of gender mainstreaming
* The difference between women’s organization and mobilization
* The role of masculinities and femininities in development contexts
