March 8 Fund 2024 awarded to Peter Katuramu
The GRÓ GEST Programme is delighted to announce that Peter Katuramu, a 2018 alumnus, is the recipient of the 2024 March 8 Fund. Katuramu, in collaboration with the Uganda Disabled Women’s Association (UDWA), has been awarded the grant for his project titled “Making Every Voice of Women and Girls with Disabilities Heard in Sexual Reproductive Health Services in Wakiso District – Kira Municipality.”
This impactful initiative addresses the critical issue of accessibility and inclusivity in sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services for wome n and girls with disabilities in Wakiso District, Uganda. The projec taims to empower 50 women and girls with disabilities and 50 stakeholders, including healthcare providers and local leaders, with knowledge and tools to ensure equal access to SRH services.
Bridging Gaps in SRHR Access for Marginalized Communities
Women and girls with disabilities face significant barriers to accessing SRH services, including physical, attitudinal, and systemic challenges. These barriers result in higher vulnerability to HIV, unwanted pregnancies, and sexual violence. The project aligns with global frameworks like the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 on health, SDG 5 on gender equality, and SDG 10 on reduced inequalities.
Key Objectives and Activities
The initiative will implement several targeted activities, including:
- Training sessions for women and girls with disabilities on their reproductive health rights and the importance of self-advocacy.
- Capacity-building workshops for healthcare providers and local leaders on inclusive practices in SRH service delivery.
- The establishment of a designated space at the Kira Municipality Referral Hospital, ensuring a comfortable and accessible environment for women and girls with disabilities to voice their concerns and access services.
Community-Led and Government-Supported Approach
The project is a collaborative effort between UDWA and the Wakiso District Department of Community-Based Services, with the district government contributing space and trainers for workshops. It builds upon UDWA’s ongoing work in disability rights and SRH, leveraging their experience to create a sustainable impact in the community.
A Testament to Leadership and Vision
Peter Katuramu’s leadership and commitment to gender and disability inclusion exemplify the transformative potential of GRÓ GEST alumni. His project reflects the March 8 Fund's mission to empower marginalized communities and champion gender equality globally.
Congratulations to Peter Katuramu and UDWA for their groundbreaking work, which promises to create a more inclusive and equitable future for women and girls with disabilities in Uganda.
