The founder of the Watanabe Trust Fund, Mr. Toshizo Watanabe awarded the grants at a ceremony in the University of Iceland 27 April. The Watanabe Trust Fund was established at the University of Iceland in 2008 and plays a significant part in strengthening the academic ties between Iceland and Japan. The Fund aims at providing educational opportunities for students and promoting goodwill between Iceland and Japan and grants scholarships to stimulate student exchanges, involving both undergraduates and postgraduates, as well as exchanges of academic staff between the two countries.

Nine university students and four scholars from different fields received grants which totalled 11 million ISK.

Ms. Malinauskaite, a project assistant at UNU-GEST, received a study grant to stay at the United Nations University in Tokyo for two months in fall 2017. Her research focuses on gender in the geothermal sector in Japan, Kenya, Ethiopa, New Zealand and Iceland, and supports a documentary UNU-GEST produces on the status of women within the sector in these different parts of the world.

The UNU-GEST team extends scincere congratulations to Ms. Malinauskaite.
