The closing ceremony of the 34th annual session of the UNU-GTP was held on October 12, 2012, with a record number of 33 UNU graduates from the six month specialized courses. The Fellows came from 17 countries: Bangladesh (1), China (2), Djibouti (1), El Salvador (2), Ethiopia (3), India (1), Kenya (10), Malawi (1), Mexico (1), Nevis (1), Nicaragua (1), Papua New Guinea (2), Philippines (2), Rwanda (2), Sri Lanka (1), Tanzania (1), and Uganda (1).

On the 2nd of October 2012, the autumn meeting of the Geothermal Association of Iceland (GAI) was held in Orkugardur. The title of the meeting was "Iceland and the United Nations University Geothermal Training Programme". This year, the schedule was dedicated to the director of UNU-GTP, Dr. Ingvar B. Fridleifsson, a newly elected honorary member of GAI.

The Short Course on Conceptual Modelling of Geothermal Systems hosted by UNU-GTP and LaGeo S.A. de C.V. will be held 24 February - 2 March 2013. Over the course of the week participants from Central- and South-America, and the Caribbean area will attend lectures given by local and international experts. Some practical sessions are included in the program as well as a field trip to Ahuachapan geothermal field.

The UNU-GTP was honored by the visit of the President of Iceland, Dr. Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, and former Foreign Secretary and Environment Secretary of the United Kingdom, Mr. David Miliband, on September 26. Mr. Miliband had delivered a lecture on The Future of Europe – Economics, Politics and Identity at the University of Iceland earlier in the day at the invitation of the President. Dr. Ingvar B. Fridleifsson, Director of the UNU-GTP, and Dr. Tumi Tómasson, Director of the UNU-FTP presented an overview of the operations of the two UNU programmes to the guests of honor during their hour long stop at the UNU-GTP.

On Friday the 21st of September 2012 at 15:00-17:00 at the University of Iceland, Askja building, all the UNU Iceland Programmes and the GEST Programme will participate in a public seminar on education for sustainable development in cooperation with the United Nations Association in Iceland (UNA Iceland).

UNU-GTP and LaGeo S.A. de C.V. will be hosting a one week Short Course on Conceptual Modelling of Geothermal Systems starting on 17 February 2013 in El Salvador.
