China’s premier, Wen Jiabao, meets with UNU-GTP fellows in Iceland

His excellency, Wen Jiabao, the Premier of the State Council of the People‘s Republic of China, came to Iceland on a two-day official visit on 20-21 April. The Premier met with the Icelandic Prime Minister, Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir, and he also visited the President of Iceland, Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson. The Premier visited various interesting geological sites during his stay in Iceland, but he himself has a degree in geology from the China University of Geoscience. Seventy eight scientists and engineers from China have received specialized training at the UNU-GTP in Iceland. Several of them are among the leading geothermal experts in China.

Fellows visit SCSI headquarters

Last week the 2012 UNU-LRT fellows visited the headquarters of the Soil Conservation Service of Iceland (SCSI) in Gunnarsholt. The fellows were told about the history of SCSI and shown some of the facilities at the headquarters.

New group of UNU-LRT fellows

Fellows attending this year’s six-month training programme have arrived. This is the third group of fellows attending the six-month training since the Land Restoration Training programme became a UNU programme in 2010.

MSc defence by Sylvia Joan Malimo and Jose Roberto Estevez Salas

Two UNU-GTP MSc defences will be held this week.  On Tuesday the 17th of April at 15:00 in room 132 in Askja at the University of Iceland, Sylvia Joan Malimo will defend her Master thesis, titled: "Aquifer fluid modeling and assessment of minerals-gas-liquid equilibria in the Námafjall geothermal system, NE-Iceland". On Wednesday the 18th of april at 15:00 in room 158 in VR2 at the University of Iceland, Jose Roberto Estevez Salas will defend his Master thesis, titled: "Geothermal Power Plant Projects in Central America: Technical and Financial Feasibility Model Assessment."

MSc defence by Uwera Rutagarama

UNU-GTP Fellow Uwera Rutagarama from Rwanda defended her thesis entitled “The role of well testing in geothermal resource assessment” on Tuesday the 27th of March.  The defence was held at the University of Iceland in Askja.  Supervisors on the project were Gylfi Páll Hersir at ISOR, Páll Jónsson at ISOR and Sigrún Hreinsdóttir at UI.  The external examiner was Grímur Björnsson at Reykjavík Geothermal.

UNU-FTP to hold course in the Caribbean on Project Cycle Management

This week, collaborators from the UNU-FTP, The Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism, and the University of Belize, and the University of Akureyri met in Iceland to plan a short course on Project Cycle Management to be held in the Caribbean.
