Announcement of MSc and PhD fellowship recipients
The evaluation of the applications received from former UNU Fellows for UNU-GTP Fellowships for MSc and PhD studies in Iceland has now been carried out. There were 11 valid applications for MSc studies and 4 for the PhD studies, which shows good interest for geothermal studies in Iceland.

UNU's SD Explorer launched today
On 22 January, UNU launched its Sustainable Development Explorer, a new campaign highlighting UNU’s work to support the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2015, the SDGs unite global action to overcome the world’s biggest challenges, from hunger and poverty to equality and peace.

Director Ludvik Georgsson awarded the Victor de Sola award in El Salvador
In early December the Director of UNU-GTP, Ludvik S. Georgsson was given the honorary Victor de Sola award by the national energy company LaGeo in El Salvador. The award is given annually in honorary recognition to a person selected by a competent committee from a list of people who have made extraordinary and lasting contributions to the development of geothermal energy in El Salvador.

A new geothermal power plant opens in the Azores Islands
This power plant was built as a part of the Renewable Energy Programme Area under the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism supported by Orkustofnun. The Programme included the installation of a 3 MW geothermal power plant to increase the share of renewables in the Azores and three support initiatives to advanced and specialised training in geothermal energy. The Programme started in 2013 and will be completed in December 2017.
