GRÓ attends a meeting of UNESCO C2Cs in Malaysia

The work of the four GRÓ training programmes was presented at the International Symposium of Category 2 Institutes and Centres under the auspices of UNESCO in the field of Natural Sciences that took place in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia 15-17 May.

GRÓ was one of 35 centres from 24 countries represented at the symposium, which was a welcomed opportunity to network with other Category 2 Centres and explore possibilities for cooperation, both with other centres, and with the Natural sciences sector of UNESCO.

In total there are 129 Category 2 Centres under the auspices of UNESCO and 64 of those are working in the field of Natural Sciences. GRÓ is the first multi-disciplinary Category 2 Centre, but three of the four GRÓ training programmes work in the field of natural sciences.

The Director General of GRÓ, Nína Björk Jónsdóttir, took part in a panel discussion on addressing the planetary crisis: climate change and biodiversity, where she presented the work of the four training programmes, with a particular focus on the geothermal, land restoration and fisheries training programmes, that work in the field of natural sciences. The centres that took part in the symposium agreed on the need to strengthen cooperation between the centres and for sharing experiences.
