send you best wishes for the festive season and a Happy New Year.

Along the northern coast of the Snæfellsnes peninsula, the UNU-FTP fellows are lined up in front of a ʻfiskbyrgiʼ, near the historical site of Gufuskálar, where in former times, Icelanders operated boats during the fishing season.

Gufuskálar was an ancient fishing-station, mentioned in written sources as early as the 15th century. Historians suggest that these so-called ʻfish shedsʼ, constructed from lava stone collected in the surrounding area, were built to dry and store the catch.

Today the site forms a part of the Snæfellsjökull National Park, established in 2001. The park aims to protect and conserve the unique landscape, indigenous plant and animal life, as well as the important cultural heritage of this beautiful peninsula.
