Welcome UNU-FTP Guest Lecturer, Dr. Barry Costa-Pierce
The UNU-FTP is pleased to welcome this year’s guest lecturer, Dr. Barry Costa-Pierce, who is currently the Chair of the Department of Marine Sciences at the University of New England. Dr. Costa-Pierce has a 40-year career in the marine and freshwater sciences. His overall research interest is in Ocean Food Ecosystems: how seafood systems throughout the world interact with marine ecosystems, fisheries, aquaculture, and people. He has worked throughout the world and USA at state, private universities, and research organizations from Asia to Africa, and from Hawaii to Maine. He is a pioneer of the field of "Ecological Aquaculture" and helped build FAO's "Ecosystem Approach to Aquaculture". He led the FAO team on "Resources Uses in Aquaculture" that presented at the 2012 Global Conference on Aquaculture in Thailand.
Dr. Costa-Pierce has served on the Editorial Board of Aquaculture for over 15 years, and in 2016 was appointed as the journal's first Editor-In-Chief. Before joining University of New England, Dr. Costa-Pierce spent 14 years as Director and Professor of Fisheries and Aquaculture for two state NOAA Sea Grant Programs: Rhode Island Sea Grant at the University of Rhode Island (2001-12) and the Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium (1998-2001) at the University of Southern Mississippi's Gulf Coast Research Lab.
Lectures will take place January 23-25, 2017 in the first floor auditorium at the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute at Skúlagata 4, and are open to the public.

9:00 Biology & Culture of the Tilapia (part 1)
A global review from the speakers’ experiences in Asia, Africa and the Americas of the biodiversity, invasive species aspects, and aquaculture research and development progress and priorities for the future, and value chain developments for the tilapias.
10:30 Biology & Culture of the Tilapia (part 2)
A lecture focused on the research and development of hatchery and nursery systems for tilapia.

9:00 Culture-Based Aquaculture
A review of culture-based aquaculture and connections to fisheries enhancement in general with examples from inland and coastal systems.
10:30 Integrated Pond Aquaculture Systems
A global review from the speakers’ experiences of integrated freshwater pond systems in Africa and Asia, including the speaker’s backyard tank systems in the USA.
