UNU-FTP Recognized by the United Nations
On December 9, 2014, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a Resolution on Sustainable Fisheries. This resolution officially recognizes the work of the UNU-FTP and its contribution to fisheries training in developing countries, specifically small island developing States. Paragraph 181 of the UN Resolution "Recognizes...the work of the United Nations University Fisheries Training Programme in Iceland and its contribution to training for developing States, in particular small island developing States, and emphasizes the need for the continuation and strengthening of this training for developing States." Link to the Resolution here.
The UNU-FTP was established through a trilateral agreement between the United Nations University, the Icelandic Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and the Marine Research Institute, and is funded through the MFA's official development assistance. Since it began operation in 1998, the UNU-FTP has trained nearly 300 students through the six month programme in Iceland. Additionally, close to 1000 participants have received training through UNU-FTP short courses held in partner countries, and nearly 30 former fellows have been awarded scholarships for masters or doctoral studies at Icelandic universities. Each year, the UNU-FTP makes grants available for former fellows to participate in international conferences.
This is the second year in a row that the Fisheries Training Programme has received such recognition from the UN General Assembly, and is a proud moment for all UNU-FTP partners, fellows, staff, and supporting agencies. We extend our warm gratitude to all those who dedicate their time and expertise to making this programme a success.
