UNU-FTP Fellows visit the Snæfellsness Penninsula

This year, the UNU-FTP Fellows were treated to some wonderful company visits on the Snæfellsness Peninsula. We started the day with a visit to the Stormur Seafood company, which works in the field of whelk harvesting and production in the town of Grundarfjörður. Next, we visited the Vör Research Station in Ólafsvík that is conducting scientific research in the local area. Sjávariðjan Rifi was the next stop on our trip. This was a wonderful visit in which the fellows learned about the process of running a business from catch to consumer and all that the process entails, from harvesting, processing, transporting, and marketing the products to working with the government to manage stocks in the most sensible way. We also paid a visit to the Icelandic Fish Market, where we witnessed the exciting and highly technical process of selling fish in Iceland. Finally, we were very lucky to visit Reykhöll Gunnu í Rifi, where we learned about the process of smoking a variety of species of fish (and where we were fortunate enough to taste some, too!).
