In collaboration with the Network for Aquaculture Centers in Asia and the Pacific (NACA), Nha Trang University in Vietnam, and Holar University College of Iceland, the UNU-FTP has completed its second course on Broodstock Managment in fin fish aquaculture in Vietnam.

The course was held in Vietnam from October 10-17th this year.

Management of broodstock is an important element of successful aquaculture enterprises in all countries, and is a particular challenge in the South East Asian region. Despite it´s importance, broodstock management is often considered difficult by some hatchery operators due to lack of expertise. Complexities are not only associated with a number of specific management principles and operational protocols, but also lack of overall planning, collaboration among seed producers, financial input and institutional support. Efforts to maintain and improve broodstock quality of any major cultured species need a strategic work plan and practical approaches, involving public sectors, breeding centers, private hatchery operators of both small and large scale, and research support.

Capacity building for all stakeholders through training is fundamentally important to raise awareness, update knowledge and enhance skills. According to NACA, "development and successful implementation of the training course on “Broodstock Management in Aquaculture” by UNU-FTP, NACA and Nha Trang University turned over a new leaf for regional capacity building effort in broodstock management in aquaculture. Admittedly this is just a start and there is still long way to go."
