Two short courses held in Tanzania
The first course was held in Kigoma 18-22nd of June at the Tanzanian Fisheries Research Institute (TAFIRI) were 26 district fisheries officers participated and the other one was conducted in Mwanza at the Fisheries Education Training Agency (FETA), Nyegecy, 25-29th of June were 30 participants took part in the course. The course focused on fish handling, spoilage, quality and processing techniques of drying and smoking of small pelagic fish from Lakes Victoria and Tanganyika called dagaa. A new design of fish dryer was introduced and the yield and quality of the product was compared to that when using traditional methods. The course was based on the final project of a former UNU-FTP fellow to reduce post-harvest loss of dagaa (Rastinobola sp.) in Lake Victoria and increase the value of it with different processing techniques and was developed by experts from the United Nations University-Fisheries Training Programme (UNU-FTP), Matís – Food and Biotech Institute and the Tanzanian Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries Development.
