Professor Trond Bjorndal is the visiting guest lecturer at the UNU-FTP this year
Professor Bjorndal is the director of CEMARE – Center for Economics and Management of Aquatic Resources – at Portsmouth Business School, University of Portsmouth in England.

Dr. Bjorndal has published textbooks on fisheries and aquaculture economics.  He has published extensively in scientific journal on topics such as open access and optimal management of fish stocks, the production function in fisheries and aquaculture, cost and productivity analyses in fishing, processing and aquaculture, market analysis for fish and fish products, and high seas fisheries management. He will give lectures on selected topics at the UNU-FTP on January 24th to 26. In addition to giving lectures Prof Bjorndal will meet with fellows individually and discuss their projects. The schedule is as follows

Monday 9-12:
The first three lectures will be devoted to rents in fisheries.  The following topics will be addressed:   
1. What are fisheries rents?
2. How do we estimate current and potential rents in a fishery?
3. Case studies, based on different methodologies:  Western Channel sole, herring, cod, haddock and whiting.

Monday 13-14:
4. Overview over the development in international fisheries law with emphasis on transboundary resources

Tuesday 9-11:
Management of international fisheries, Case studies: Norwegian Spring Spawning (Atlanto Scandian) herring, Northeast Atlantic bluefin tuna

Tuesday 11-12:
Value chain analysis

Wednesday 9-11
Two lectures will be devoted to the theory of optimal harvesting of farmed fish.  A standard biological year-class model will be extended to include economic variables, thus representing a bio-economic model.  The optimal time of harvesting will be derived under different conditions.
