Out and about in Mývatn
GRÓ-FTP fellows spent an enjoyable day touring the Mývatn area in beautiful October weather. Highlights of the day trip were stops at Góðafoss, the 30-metre-wide falls on the Skjálfandafljót river, named “the waterfall of the gods”, the volcanic caves and rock formations of Dimmuborgir with scenery reminiscent of an ancient collapsed citadel, and Námaskarð, a geothermal area of hot bubbling pools and steam vents. Special thanks go to Héðinn Sverrisson of Geiteyjarströnd who showed the GRÓ-FTP fellows around his small, artisanal, trout smoking business. The fellows readily agreed that the locally farmed trout, smoked with traditional methods in sheep dung, was a delicious delicacy and were fascinated by the family-run Icelandic business built up on age-old traditions of farming and fishing by the beautiful lake Mývatn shore.
