GRÓ signs host institution agreement with the Marine and Freshwater Research Insititue
Representatives of the GRÓ Centre for Capacity Development under the auspices of UNESCO and the Marine and Freshwater Research Insititue met today to sign a new host institution agreement. This agreement builds upon 22 years of partnership and experience the MFRI has accumulated in its role in administrating the Fisheries Training Programme. The Chairman of GRÓ Board, Jon Karl Ólafsson and GRÓ Centre Director, Bryndís Kjartansdóttir, were welcomed to the new facilities by MFRI Director Sigurður Guðjónsson, MFRI CFO Sigvaldi Egill Lárusson, and GRÓ Fisheries Training Programme Deputy Director Mary Frances Davidson.
These are exciting times at the Fisheries Training Programme. It was only a couple of weeks ago that we had the pleasure to move, along with the rest of our host institution, the Icelandic Marine and Freshwater Research Institute (MFRI), into a brand new facility in Hafnafjörður. And today, we welcomed representatives from the GRÓ Centre for Capacity Building, Sustainable Use of Natural Resources and Societal Change, under the auspices of UNESCO for a tour of the new building, our offices, and to sign a new host institution agreement with the MFRI. This agreement builds upon decades of good cooperation between the MFRI and the Fisheries Training Programme.
The close relationship with the MFRI is a fundamental strength of the Fisheries Training Programme. Evaluations of our programme, both internal and external, have consistantly highlighted the importance of housing fellows in a professional research environment where they have close contact and access to expertise in the field of fisheries. Beyond teaching and supervision, fellows gain exposure to the working culture and collaborative atmosphere at MFRI, which can be a transformative learning experience they take home when they complete the programme.
