The United Nations University Fisheries Training Program was established in 1998 through a tri-lateral agreement between the United Nations University, the Icelandic Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute (MFRI). It operates in collaboration with academic institutions, private companies and government bodies. Its Icelandic partner institutes include the MFRI, University of Iceland, Matís Food Research, the University of Akureyri and Holar University.
Each year the UNU-FTP offers a six-months training program in Iceland for fellows from developing countries. The program aims to strengthen professional capacity of the fellows so they can better contribute to the continuous development of fisheries in their home countries. It runs from September to February, and is divided into three parts; the introductory course, the specialization line, and the individual research project.
