Fellows on field excursion
During the six-month training in Iceland, the UNU-LRT fellows go on two different field excursions. Last week the fellows undertook their second field excursion, this time to the West and North of Iceland. The focus was on land degradation in Iceland, implementation of restoration work, restoration vs. reclamation and an introduction to Icelandic cultural background through stories and historical sites.
The excursion gave practical lessons of what the fellows learned during the first three months of course work, namely the land degradation that has happened in Iceland in the past and the efforts that have been made in restoring and reclaiming land. The fellows got the opportunity to visit a farmer that participates in the Farmers Heal the Land-project initiated by the Soil Conservation Service of Iceland (SCSI), consultants from the SCSI guided the group through different restoration sites in both West and North Iceland and a visit to the historical sites of Holar and to the Holar University College was also on the excursion´s agenda.
