GRÓ LRT visit to partners in Uganda and Malawi
Halldóra Traustadóttir, Operations Manager of GRÓ LRT, travelled to Uganda and Malawi, at the end of September and beginning of October, to visit GRÓ LRT’s partner institutions in the two countries. The purpose of the visits was to meet the directors of partner institutions and interview potential candidates for GRÓ LRT Fellowship to attend the annual six-month training in Iceland.
In Kampala, Halldóra met with deans and heads of departments at Makerere University and Kyambogo University, and gave a public lecture on ecosystem restoration in Iceland at Makerere University’s School of Forestry, Environmental and Geographical Sciences. She interviewed nominated candidates from the two universities, as well as field officers from district local governments, where Uganda National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) liaised with the respective local authorities in nominating the candidates.
In Malawi, Halldóra had meetings with directors in the Department of Land Resources Conservation, at the Ministry of Agriculture, and in the Department of Mines, at the Ministry of Mining, and interviewed field officers from the two departments. Additionally, Halldóra met with heads of departments and interviewed nominated candidates at Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR).
As always in GRÓ LRT’s visits to partner countries, Halldóra also met with GRÓ LRT alumni in both countries, but 31 fellows from Uganda and 16 from Malawi have graduated from the GRÓ LRT six-month training in Iceland.
Uganda and Malawi are GRÓ LRT’s key partner countries in Africa and regular visits to partner institutions are important in fostering GRÓ LRT’s collaborative partnerships with institutions that play a significant role in land restoration and sustainable land management in developing countries.
