GRÓ LRT Fellows explore ecosystem restoration in Þórsmörk Nature Reserve

Last week, the GRÓ LRT fellows embarked on an insightful one-day excursion to the Þórsmörk Nature Reserve, where they explored the critical role of ecosystem restoration in enhancing resilience and mitigating disaster risks.

The excursion began with visits to two of Iceland's most iconic waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss and Gljúfrabúi. Upon arrival in Þórsmörk, a stunning valley nestled between glaciers, the group delved into the day's central theme — ecosystem restoration. Þórsmörk, known for its diverse flora and dramatic landscapes, serves as a living example of how targeted restoration efforts can strengthen ecosystem resilience and mitigate disaster risks.

The fellows also had the opportunity to explore the numerous hiking trails that wind through Þórsmörk. These trails offered breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, glaciers, and lush vegetation. The excursion concluded with a visit to the Stakkholtsgjá Canyon, a beautiful gorge carved by water.

This one-day excursion was not only a valuable learning experience for the GRÓ LRT fellows but also a memorable time to spend together before they return to their home countries at the end of this month.
