Celebrating the International Day of Biodiversity with a UNESCO Panel Discussion

Today we celebrate the International day for Biological Diversity by participating in UNESCO expert panel on the theme of the day, “Our solutions are in nature”. GRÓ LRT Deputy Director is one of the speakers in the panel, addressing the topic “What are the possible ways/tools to regenerate ecosystems and restore our links to the living?” This UNESCO initiative gives us opportunity to come together in this period of great uncertainty around common values, to share the resources on which we can rely upon to be collectively resilient and to accelerate a transformation towards a more sustainable and fair world.

Besides the GRÓ LRT Deputy Director, the other panellists are: Tim Christophersen, the Coordinator of the ‘Nature for Climate’ Branch at UN Environment and focal point for the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030; Sir Tim Smit, the Co-Founder of the Eden Project aimed to show the capacity of nature to regenerate a derelict sterile site and the potential of humans to recreate fertility as a symbol of hope; and David Obura, the Founding Director of CORDIO East Africa, a knowledge organization supporting sustainability of coral reef and marine systems in the Western Indian Ocean. Noëline Raondry Rakotoarisoa, Chief of Section on Man and Biosphere Networking, Biosphere Reserves and Capacity Building, Division of Ecological and Earth Sciences at UNESCO, moderates the panel discussion.

UNESCO organized five expert panels to mark this year’s International Day of Biodiversity. These panels address what lessons we can learn from the COVID-19 situation and the opportunities to accelerate a transformation towards a more sustainable and fair world, grounded in Agenda 2030. You can find all the panels on the website of UNESCO.
