In 2013, UNU-GTP and Reykjavík University signed a contract of co-operation on MSc studies in geothermal energy.  On 17. December, Tufwane Mwagomba became the first MSc Fellow to defend his thesis at Reykjavík University.  The title of his thesis is Preliminary Technical and Economic Feasibility Study of Binary Power Plant for Chiweta Geothermal Field, Malawi and he will graduate from the Iceland School of Energy at RU in January.

Tufwane stated in his defence that Malawi is experiencing exciting times as the potential for geothermal energy production is high as the country is situated within the East African Rift System but it has so far not been utilised to the fullest.  To be able to fulfil this potential Malawi needs the expertise and knowhow to build up a renewable energy industry in the country.  Tufwane plans to go back to Malawi and make the most of his acquired knowledge to help speed up energy development in his country.

Congratulations to Tufwane, the first MSc Fellow to graduate from Reykjavík University.
