Short course V on well design and geothermal drilling technology
The UNU-GTP conducted Short Course V on Well Design and Geothermal Drilling Technology for selected employees of EDA RENOVÁVEIS and the University of the Azores in Ponta Delgada of São Miguel Island of the Azores, from January 18th to 30th. The course covered the basics of well design and geothermal drilling technology through lectures and exercises, and one day was devoted to a field trip. The participants also worked on group projects, which were presented on the closing day. The course was attended physically by 12 people in Ponta Delgada, whereas 2 joined the classroom lectures and exercises online from Terceira Island. Supervision and instruction was in the hands of Mr. Sverrir Thórhallsson, UNU-GTP Studies Board member and head of the Drilling Technology path in the 6 month studies, and Mr. Hinrik Árni Bóasson, UNU-GTP lecturer and engineer at Mannvit.
This short course was the fifth in a series of six short courses held in the Azores over the period 2014-2016 that are financed through the EEA Grants scheme. Previous trainings that have taken place are Workshop on Geothermal for Decision-Makers & Short Course I on Geological Exploration of Geothermal Fields (September 8-20, 2014), Short Course II on Geothermal Utilization and Geothermal Power Plants (November 17-29, 2014), Short Course III on Borehole Geophysics in Geothermal Development (June 15-27, 2015), and Short Course IV on Chemistry of Thermal Fluids (September 7-19). The remaining short course, on geophysical exploration for geothermal resources, is planned for April 4-16.
