Short Course on Geothermal Development in Central America

20 December 2007
The 2007 Short Course for Central American countries was held in Santa Tecla, El Salvador, 25 November – 2 December. The Course dealt with geothermal development in Central America with special focus on resource assessment and environmental management. In addition to lectures and debates on the subjects, there were practical excercises (several working groups) in reservoir resource assessments of geothermal fields from several countries and in environmental management planning for specific geothermal fields.
There were 61 participants (including lecturers) from Costa Rica 10, El Salvador 25, Guatemala 1, Honduras 2, Iceland 5, Kenya 1, Mexico 1, Nicaragua 14, Philippines 2. The lecturers came from Costa Rica 4, El Salvador 3, Iceland 3, Kenya 1, Nicaragua 1, and the Philippines 2. Of the Central American lecturers, 4 are former UNU Fellows. The Workshop in 2006 and the Short Course in 2007 were both co-hosted by the UNU-GTP and LaGeo. The Short Course was a great success where attendees participated in lively discussions after each lecture round offering their points of view, thoughts and questions. The project work was stimulating and the plan is for to involve more practical exercises in the Short Courses in the future. The proceedings of the Short Course were published on a CD and are also available from our  web site.
