Short Course on Deep Geothermal Exploration in progress in Kigali, Rwanda

The UNU-GTP is presently conducting a Short Course on Deep Geothermal Exploration in Kigali, Rwanda at the request of the Icelandic International Development Agency (ICEIDA) for the Energy, Water and Sanitation Authority (EWSA) of Rwanda.

The short course started on June 25 and will continue until June 29, covering a general introduction on surface exploration, but focusing in greater depth on geothermal wells, drilling, borehole geology, geochemistry, and environmental science. The short course is attended by 22 employees of EWSA, mostly from the Geothermal Development Unit, but a few from other departments. The course is the starting phase of more involved hands-on training of EWSA experts in the field, carried out in conjunction with the drilling of Rwanda‘s first geothermal exploration wells at Karisimbi in the western part of the country. All of the training activities in the coming months will be carried out by the UNU-GTP at the request of ICEIDA, with support from experts of ÍSOR – IcelandGeoSurvey.
