Short Course III on surface exploration in Kenya 2008

6 December 2008
The “Short Course III on Exploration for Geothermal Resources” opened on October 24 at Lake Bogoria. This four week event was co-organized by the United Nations University Geothermal Training Programme (UNU-GTP) and Kenya Electricity Generating Company, Ltd. (KenGen). The 37 participants came from 11 countries of East Africa.
Besides the home country, Kenya with 18 participants, these are Djibouti (2), Ethiopia (2), Eritrea (2), Tanzania (2), Uganda (2), Rwanda (2), Burundi (2), Zambia (2), DR Congo (1), and finally Yemen (2), that despite being on the other side of the Red Sea has common geological features with East Africa. This was the first time that Zambia and DR Congo participated in events associated with the UNU-GTP. The first part of the Short Course was a week of field work in the Lake Bogoria region under guidance of KenGen instructors. It continued from October 31 - Novermber 17 at Lake Naivasha with lectures and project work. The teaching was in the hands of 4 experts from Iceland (UNU-GTP and ISOR – Iceland GeoSurvey), 19 experts from KenGen - all except one former UNU Fellows in Iceland, and five experts, from the neighbouring countries, all former UNU Fellows.

The lectures covered sciences related to geothermal surface exploration, i.e. geology, geophysics, geochemistry and environmental science, together with an introduction to reservoir assessment and geothermal drilling, all demonstrated by numerous field examples. Furthermore three days were devoted to the status of geothermal exploration and development in the region and planning of geothermal projects. The programme of the Short Course can be accessed  here (pdf file with programme).
