The UNU-GTP is currently conducting Short Course III on Borehole Geophysics in Geothermal Development in the Azore islands of Portugal for selected employees of EDA RENOVÁVEIS – the department of renewables within the Electricity Company of the Azores (EDA).  The course covers various aspects of well logging, well testing and reservoir monitoring and consists of lectures, exercies and actual logging and testing of wells in the field.  It is attended physically by 9 people in Ponta Delgada on São Miguel island and 2 join the classroom online from Terceira island.  The short course started on June 15 and will conclude on 27June, with teaching in the hands of Benedikt Steingrímsson and Thorsteinn Egilson of ÍSOR – Iceland Geosurvey.

The short course is the third in a series of six short courses held in the Azores over the period 2014-2016, financed through the EEA Grants scheme, which has the goal of reducing economic and social disparities in 16 EU countries in Central and Southern Europe.  Previous trainings that took place in 2014 are Workshop on Geothermal for Decision-Makers & Short Course I on Geological Exploration of Geothermal Fields (8-20 September) and Short Course II on Geothermal Utilization and Geothermal Power Plants (17-29 November).  Further courses on chemistry of thermal fluids, drilling supervision and technology, and geophysical exploration are planned for this year and early 2016.
