Official visit from China

12 July 2007
An official delegation from Shaanxi Province in China, headed by Executive Vice Governor Mr. Zhao Zhengyong accompanied by the Mayor of Xianyang Mr. Qian Junchang and other officials, visited the UNU-GTP on Tuesday the 10th of July, 2007.
Shaanxi Province is inhabited by 36 million people whereof 820.000 live in Xianyang. Xianyang was the capital when Emperor Qin Shihuang´s (259 B.C.-210 B.C.) gathered China into one empire.
There are rich geothermal resources in the Province and in 2006 a large geothermal district heating system (Shaanxi Green Energy Geothermal Development Co., Ltd) was opened in Xianyang. This is a cooperative project between Enex China and Shaanxi CGCO. District heating in large parts of Xianyang will gradually be converted from coal to geothermal energy.

During the visit at UNU-GTP Dr. Ingvar Birgir Fridleifsson gave a lecture on the UNU-GTP and Capacity Building in China. One of the current UNU Fellows, Sheng Zhongjie, acted as interpreter.
Sixty five UNU Fellows from China have participated in the 6 month specialised training at the UNU-GTP since 1980. Many of them are among the leading geothermal specialists of China.
After the presentation and discussions, members of the delegation and the UNU Fellows met for an informal cup of coffee or tea.
