Director Ludvik Georgsson awarded the Victor de Sola award in El Salvador
In early December the Director of UNU-GTP, Ludvik S. Georgsson was given the honorary Victor de Sola award by the national energy company LaGeo in El Salvador. The award is given annually in honorary recognition to a person selected by a competent committee from a list of people who have made extraordinary and lasting contributions to the development of geothermal energy in El Salvador.
The award was given in recognition of his important contribution to the study and development for geothermal energy and Ludvik’s valuable work and educational contribution through UNU-GTP which contributed to the country’s capacity to manage its own geothermal resource. Furthermore, LaGeo wanted to recognise his continuous support and for being an unconditional friendly figure for the GrupoCEL colleagues.
During the ceremony Arq. David Antonio López, president of Grupo CEL highlighted the great professional career of Ludvik, and also dedicated a section to talk about his great role as a trainer and friend of the company. Ludvik, expressed his in his speech a great admiration and appreciation for El Salvador and for the geothermal work at LaGeo since it was established. He also highlighted the excellent relations with architect David López, who, according to Ludvik, has been a key player in strengthening relations between Iceland and LaGeo.
The UNU-GTP is proud of this acknowledgement and we wish to congratulate Ludvik on this occasion.
This is in fact the second time the award has been given in support of UNU-GTP’s contribution to El Salvador. The first one was given in 2014 for UNU-GTP’s contribution to the technical and scientific capabilities at LaGeo. The Victor de Sola award is named after Mr. Víctor de Sola president of the Comisión Ejectiva Hidroeléctrica del Río Lempa (CEL) from 1950-1978 when the study and development of geothermal energy began in El Salvador. The first phase of the project concluded with the construction and start-up of the Ahuachapán Geothermal Power Plant which was the first geothermal power plant in the Central American region.
