Director General of UNESCO visits GRÓ GTP
The Director General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, visited the GRÓ Geothermal Training Programme and met with the fellows and staff. Iceland has various connection to UNESCO apart from the four GRÓ training programmes, the Thingvellir National Park, to name just a few so this visit was a great opportunity for GRÓ to discuss how the work of the four GRÓ training programmes contributes to UNESCO‘s mission and global priorities. GRÓ is a Category 2 Centre that works under the auspices of UNESCO.
Mrs. Azoulay told the fellows about the role and mission of UNESCO and fellows told her about the potential of geothermal energy around the world and in their home countries as well as about their experience in the Programme, now that they are approaching graduation in a months time.
Peter Ndirangu Maina, PhD fellow, presented his experience in the programme and how GRÓ GTP and Kenyan energy companies are working together to spread knowledge about geothermal energy across Eastern Africa. Laurentia Mutiara Sani Widyawati, fellow from Indonesia, talked about her participation in the programme and her research in environmental science. Darwin Clemente Mateus Tarazona, fellow from Colombia, presented his experience and potential of using geothermal in Colombia, which to date is an untapped energy resource in his country.
