Global contributions of UNU-GTP recognised by the former President of Iceland
The former President of Iceland, Mr. Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, recognised the important contribution of UNU-GTP towards the country's foreign relations, mentioning the large number of international participants that have been trained in the Programme, and even suggested it was perhaps Iceland's most important factor in the global success of combating climate change.
Over the last 40 years, UNU-GTP has trained 694 Fellows through the Six Month Training in Iceland, over 1300 participants in the MDG/SDG Short Course series, and over 1109 have attended customer-designed short courses on various topics. Additionally, 62 MSc Fellows have graduated on a UNU-GTP MSc Fellowship and 1 PhD Fellow has defended her thesis on a UNU-GTP PhD Fellowship.
UNU-GTP was established in 1979 and is funded through Iceland's official developing assistance. The mandate of the Programme is capacity building in developing countries with the aim of establishing a team of geothermal experts to assist developing countries in developing and utilising their indigenous geothermal resources. With these efforts, UNU-GTP contributes significantly towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals nr 7 - Affordable and Clean Energy, nr 13 - Climate Action, and nr 5 - Gender Equality.
UNU-GTP will continue to strive towards making a notable impact through its activities as a new group of experts is getting ready for the Six Month Training starting this April.
