Annual Visiting Lecturer at the UNU-GTP 2015

30 September 2015

The UNU Visiting Lecturer in 2015 is the Ethiopian geologist and geothermal specialist Dr. Meseret Teklemariam Zemedkun.

Meseret got her BSc degree in geology from Addis Ababa University in 1984. She was a UNU Fellow for the 6 month geothermal training in Iceland at the UNU Geothermal Training Programme in 1985, and got a Postgraduate Diploma in Geothermal Energy Technology in Italy in 1990. She did her PhD studies at the University of Pisa, dealing with the geological processes of the Aluto-Langano geothermal system in Ethiopia, and defended her PhD thesis in 1996.

Dr. Meseret made her professional name as a geologist and geothermal expert at the Geological Survey of Ethiopia (GSE), and was in charge of its geothermal department from 2003.  In 2009, she left GSE and was an international geothermal consultant at ICS-UNIDO in Italy for one year, and in 2010-2011 she was at the African Union (AUC) in Ethiopia. In 2011, she took over as the Programme Manager of the ARGeo project, the regional Geothermal Programme for East Africa, hosted at UNEP‘s Nairobi office in Kenya.

Dr. Meseret has a wealth of experience in exploration and development of geothermal resources in Ethiopia and East-Africa.  She has been sitting on the Board of IGA – the International Geothermal Association, in 2001-2006, and again from 2010, and is the president of its African Regional Geothermal Branch.  She has given lectures on geothermal and energy all over the world, in conferences and as a guest lecturer.

Dr. Meseret gives lectures on geothermal energy in Vídgelmir in Orkugardur, Grensásvegur 9, on October 5-9, starting at 9:00 in the morning, according to the following agenda, with each lecture expected to be one hour plus discussion:
