Announcement of the fellowship recipients

13 February 2014

The evaluation of the applications received from former UNU Fellows for UNU-GTP Fellowships for MSc and PhD studies in Iceland has now been done.  There were 21 applications for MSc studies and 5 for the PhD studies 5, which shows the great interest for geothermal studies in Iceland.

Unfortunately, due to a budget cut from the Government to Iceland’s development cooperation, the UNU-GTP could only award 4 full MSc Fellowships and one PhD Fellowship in 2014 which is less than was previously planned.

The decision on whom to award the MSc and PhD Fellowships was very tough, with many excellent applications sent in.  The final results were influenced by various factors.  The lucky ones, who have been offered a UNU-GTP Fellowship to start their studies in late August 2014, and have consequently accepted, are the following:

MSc Fellowship:

Ms. Selamawit Worku, GSE, Ethiopia, in Geothermal Geology at UI
Mr. Ngereja M. Mgejwa, MEM, Tanzania, Geothermal Geology at UI
Mr. Victor Otieno, KenGen, Kenya, in Geothermal Geology at UI
Mr. Angel Monroy Parada, LaGeo, El Salvador in Geothermal Engineering at RU

PhD Fellowship:

Mr. Farah Omar Farah, MoENR, Djibouti, in Geothermal (Drilling) Engineering at UI

However, we would like to draw attention to the fact that each application is valid for two consecutive years, i.e. the applications submitted for 2014 will also be considered in 2015.

In addition, three additional MSc students will be starting their studies in Iceland in August under the UNU-GTP umbrella, but their Fellowships are sponsored by their home countries.
