30th Annual Session at UNU-GTP

The 30th annual session of the UNU-GTP opened on 16th April 2008. This year 22 UNU Fellows participate in the six month specialized courses. They come from China 5,
Costa Rica 1, Djibouti 1, El Salvador 2, Eritrea 1, Ethiopia 1, Indonesia 2, Jordan 1, Kenya 1, Mexico 1, Nicaragua 1, Rwanda 1, Tanzania 1, Uganda 1, and Yemen 2. They will be trained in: Geothermal
Utilization 7, Chemistry of Thermal Fluids 3, Environmental Studies 3, Reservoir Engineering 3, Geological Exploration 3, Borehole Geophysics 2, and Drilling Technology 1.
During 1979-2007, 380 scientists and engineers from 41 countries have completed the six month courses. This year the UNU-GTP welcomes participants from two new
countries; Rwanda and Yemen. In many countries in Africa, Asia, Central America, and Central and Eastern Europe, UNU-GTP graduates are among the leading specialists in geothermal research and
development. They have been very successful, and have contributed significantly to energy development in their parts of the world.
Eleven former UNU Fellows have been working this year on their MSc projects under the cooperation agreement between the UNU-GTP and the University of Iceland. Mr. Iderbat Lkhagvadorj (applied physicist from Mongolia) started his MSc studies in September 2005 and six former UNU Fellows (from China, Djibouti, Iran, Kenya, and the Philippines), who started their MSc studies in September 2006, will complete in 2008. Four former UNU Fellows (from El Salvador, Ethiopia, and two from Indonesia) started their MSc studies in September 2007. They all receive Fellowships from the UNU-GTP. Ten former UNU Fellows have graduated since the MSc programme was started in cooperation with the University of Iceland in 2000.
