GRÓ meeting with a delegation from Mongolia
The work of the four GRÓ training progammes was presented to a delegation from Mongolia that visited Iceland in September, as part of a high-level sustainable finance and business innovation exchange, organised by the Nordic House in Mongolia. The visit was partially funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers‘ Nordic Embassy Cooperation, that aims to promote cooperation among Nordic embassies and diplomatic missions in the world in line with the Nordic Council of Ministers Our vision 2030.
In total, 54 fellows from Mongolia have attended three of the four GRÓ training programmes. Thereof 37 have participated in the GRÓ Land Restoration Training Programme, 16 the GRÓ Geothermal Training Programme and one the GRÓ Gender Equality Studies and Training Programme. Two alumni from Mongolia have graduated on a scholarship from the GRÓ programmes. Purevsuren Dorj, fellow of the Geothermal Training Programme from 2001 and recipient of a Master‘s scholarship from 2003-2005, was a part of the Mongolian delegation. He is now head of the Renewable Energy Division at the National Energy Center of Mongolia. The other scholarsip recipient is Sumjidmaa Sainnemekh, that graduated with a PhD from the Agricultural University of Iceland in 2022.
The meeting took place at the Reykjavík campus of the Agricultural University of Iceland, where the GRÓ LRT is hosted. Presentations were given by Nína Björk Jónsdóttir, Director General of the GRÓ Centre for Capacity Development, Sustainability and Societal Change, Sjöfn Vilhelmsdóttir, Director of the GRÓ Land Restoration Training Programme, Bjarni Richter, Director of the GRÓ Geothermal Training Programme, and Christian Schultze, Head of International Relations and Research at the Agricultural Univerisity of Iceland, that gave a presentation of the main issues and challenges in Icelandic agriculture.
The Mongolian delegation was comprised of representatives of different bodies and organisations from government and the private sector. It was organised by the Mongolian Sustainable Finance Association (MSFA) that aims to promote environmentally and socially responsible practices within the Mongolian financial sector and business organizations. Its goals include establishing a sustainable finance ecosystem, creating green loan and investment infrastructure, and spearheading sustainable development and green economic growth.
The meeting was a welcome opportunity to engage with the Mongolian delegation and discuss cooperation between GRÓ and Mongolia through the years.
