Director General of UNESCO visits GRÓ
Mrs. Audrey Azoulay, Director General of UNESCO, visited the GRÓ Geothermal Training Programme today, met with GRÓ GTP fellows and alumni, and the GRÓ Centre. The visist was a great opportunity for GRÓ to discuss with the Director General how the work of the four GRÓ training programmes contributes to UNESCO‘s mission and global priorities. GRÓ is a Category 2 Centre that works under the auspices of UNESCO.
Mrs. Azoulay told the fellows about the role and mission of UNESCO and discussed with them the potential of geothermal energy around the world and in their home countries. The fellows told the Director General about their experience in the GRÓ Geothermal Training Programme, now that they are approaching graduation in a months time.
Peter Ndirangu Maina, 2022 GRÓ GTP alumni and current PhD scholarship recipient, presented his experience in the programme and how GRÓ GTP and Kenyan energy companies are working together to spread knowledge about geothermal energy across Eastern Africa. Laurentia Mutiara Sani Widyawati, fellow from Indonesia, talked about her participation in the programme and her research on environmental science. Darwin Clemente Mateus Tarazona, fellow from Colombia, presented his experience and the potential of using geothermal in Colombia, which to date is an untapped energy resource.
Nína Björk Jónsdóttir, Director General of GRÓ, Jón Karl Ólafsson, Chairman of the GRÓ Governing Board, Bjarni Richter, Director of the GRÓ Geothermal Training Programme and Daði Þorbjörnsson, from ÍSOR the host institution of the GRÓ GTP, welcomed Mrs. Azoulay to Iceland.
