GRÓ-FTP at IIFET 2024
Ten former fellows presented major research projects at the IIFET 2024 held last week in Penang, Malaysia.
This was the 6th time GRÓ-FTP sponsors its fellows to participate in the biennial conference of the International Institute of Fisheries Economics & Trade (IIFET).
It is an example of the various resources available to specialists from developing countries, after graduation form the FTP’s Six-month training programme.
This 21st edition of the IIFET conference was organised by WorldFish and the Department of Fisheries in Malaysia, with over 300 IIFET members taking part.
To focus attention on the major issues currently bearing on fisheries economics, the chosen theme for the conference was Aquatic Food Systems in the Blue Economy.
Keynote speeches were given on issues such as the economics of food and nutrition security, gender economics in fisheries and aquaculture, resilience in the blue economy and distributional justice and governance.
Apart from participating in seminars and workshops, this was a great opportunity for the FTP fellows to network amongst leading specialists in their field and, of course, to reinforce ties with one another.
The following presentations were given by FTP-fellows:
- Chamari Tathsaramala Dissanayake Dadigamuwage (Sri Lanka): 1) Unlocking the Potential: Economic viability of Sandfish (Holothuria scabra) Aquaculture in Northern Sri Lanka, 2) An innovative approach to adding value to poorly processed and low-value sea cucumber species.
